Default Getting the best of both worlds. And effective PVE AND PVP build.

Im trying to firgure out some builds for a WAR/MONK or WAR/ELE. I want a really hard hitting tank that will be able to take a considerable amount of damage. Now not even playing the game before I'm at a slight disadvantige. Like I said in the title I need an effective PVE and PVP build or some suggestions. On a side note, do they allow in game to change your build as much as you want in game to swich from a PVE to PVP and vise versa?

thanks in advance.

In outposts and towns and gathering areas for PvP, you can change your skills around. So you don't need to have one build to use constantly. In fact, for a W/?, it is hard to have a build efective for both PvE and PvP in my opinion. In PvE, you want some defense, but in PvP you want pure offense.

I'm gonna run a W/Mo and use Healing in PvE and Smiting in PvP.

After a long time coming up with a build suitable for my tasts (damage dealer: pvp and pve) I setted on ranger/warrior. Its almost all ranger btw. change only 1 skill to switch from pve to pvp.

Class: Ranger / Warrior

Attributes: (cost)
Expertise: 10 (61)
Marksmanship: 11 (77)
Wilderness Survival: 10 (61)

Total attribute points used: 199/200

Skills:
1) Favorable Winds - (5,5,60) Create a level 7 Spirit. For creatures within its range, arrows move twice as fast as normal and strike for +3 damage. This Spirit dies after 118 seconds.
2) Kindle Arrows - (5,2,12) For 12 seconds, your arrows deal an additional 17 fire damage.
3) Frenzy - (5,0,4) For 8 seconds, you attack 35% faster but take double damage.
4) Crippling Shot (elite) - (10,0,10) If Crippling Shot hits, your target becomes Crippled for 15 seconds. This attack cannot be blocked or evaded. This is an elite skill.
5) Hunter's Shot - (5,0,5) If Hunter's Shot hits, you strike for +16 damage. If this attack hits a foe that is moving or knocked down, that foe begins bleeding for 20 seconds.
6) Precision Shot - (10,0,6) If Precision Shot hits, you strike for +24 damage. Precision Shot cannot be blocked or evaded. This action is easily interrupted.
7) Dual Shot - (10,0,5) Shoot two arrows simultaneously at target foe. These arrows deal 25% less damage than normal.
8) Barbed Trap - (15,2,20) When Barbed Trap is triggered, all foes in the area take 65 piercing damage, become crippled, and begin bleeding for 18 seconds. Barbed Trap ends after 90 seconds. While activating this skill, you are easily interrupted.

Switch crippling shot with barrage for pve.

Barrage (elite) - (5,0,1) All your preparations are removed. Shoot arrows at up to 5 enemies near your target. These arrows strike for +12 damage if they hit. This is an elite skill.

I must say I feel very good about myself.

i would have to agree here.

just buy as many skills as you can that you think you might need from all the skill trainers you come across. and just swap them out as you see fit for each mission/battle.

no single 8 skill line-up is best suited for all missions/battles.
just take what you need and leave what you dont need.

ya, i find it kinda hard to do that with a mesmer unless i changed all of my skills. for warriors, there are a few key spells that will help you survive in pve and do pretty well in pvp - bonnetti's for example.

Not that I don't agree with the general sentiment of this post, I do disagree as going pure offense. There are several skills that are "defensive" in nature that will help a warrior. I also believe that it's VERY easy to have a good PVE and PVP W/Mo build.

That being said it does help to change out one or two skills for the situation. There are some skills that are outstanding against mobs and there are some skills that will only be good against a human opponent.

You should look at the skills and post a build up here that you think might work, then we can tell you why a certain skill you picked is good for X situation but not necessarily the best for Y.

As much as I hate favorable winds I will say that in PvE spirits are not the useful since they havea physical entity plus range. The usefulness of PvP is to be debated I guess.

The only thing about that Ranger build I'd seriously reconsider is Favorable Winds. While the bonus is apparent when you use it, the penalty is that the skill is symmetric - all Rangers on the other team get the same bonus - so if you just use it in random PvP matchups it'll likely be of little benefit overall.

Of course all of this goes out the window if you have a Ranger-heavy team and can really maximize the bonus of Favorable Winds. But if you can't break the symmetry, don't run rituals.

Peace,
-CxE
